Dental indemnity insurance and GDC requirements
From November 2015, the GDC also implemented a rule that before renewing your registration you need to confirm that you have the relevant indemnity insurance in place, or will have before you start to practice.
DCP’s also need to confirm their indemnity in the same way as does anyone on the GDC register.
As this new system was implemented over 12 months ago, it is likely that most practicing dentists and DCP’s are already familiar with this legislation.
However, if you are just about to qualify or are re-entering the profession, this will be important to note going forward.
Why do the GDC insist on Indemnity Insurance?
Therefore the GDC changed it’s application process to reduce the number of healthcare professionals practicing without the correct insurance.
Indemnity insurance is essential. Don’t get caught out!
First time GDC applications – how does it work?
If you are new to registering with the GDC, then they don’t expect you to have already arranged indemnity insurance.
As long as you declare to ensure the correct cover is in place before you start to practice, this is acceptable to them.
It may be that your employer will cover you or you may be covered under Crown indemnity insurance if working in a hospital. Either way, it is your responsibility to get proof of their cover to protect yourself.
Advantages to your own cover – rather than your employers’
There are advantages to having your own indemnity cover, over taking the policy of your employer. It isn’t a requirement from the GDC though; you just need to ensure that you are covered correctly for your role to retain your GDC status on the register.
For example, if you are a dental nurse or a technician it could be perfectly fine to be under the cover of your employer.
Often your own indemnity cover can provide added legal aid if you did have a case drawn against you, or extra access to support helplines.
Types of Indemnity that are deemed appropriate include:
-
Medical Defence Organisations
-
Insurance Providers
-
Employers Indemnity Scheme
-
NHS Crown Indemnity
